Gardens On Tenth Recognized For Its Work With Seniors

The good work Gardens On Tenth is doing for seniors care in Altona and area has not gone unnoticed. The board of directors was presented with this year’s Award of Excellence for its forward thinking and efforts to provide various levels of care for seniors in the community.

“The award is from the Long Term & Continuing Care Association of Manitoba and it is recognition of the the work that the board of directors for Gardens on Tenth has been doing, specifically in regards to taking care of the seniors in our community,” said Managing Director Laurie Schellenberg.

Gardens of Tenth has received a fair amount of coverage in the local media over the past year or so for construction of a four story, 66 suite independent living facility that provides some services for tenants. Schellenberg points out, however, the award that the board received covers all aspects of seniors care that Gardens On Tenth provides.

“The new building is a symbol of the forward thinking and proactive approach that our board takes, but it is the work that the board is doing in general that was recognized.”

Manitoba Health has spearheaded the strategy of allowing seniors to age in place, that is, in their own communities, which is a philosophy that Gardens On Tenth is pursuing.

“At the Gardens On Tenth, residents are able to live here with home care support and with our staffing support until they need a hospital or a personal care home. I think that’s what makes this place so unique and why it’s being recognized.”

Schellenberg says the board is pleased its efforts are being recognized. She says the directors are trying to move toward becoming more of a governance board and less hands on, but they are still very involved and a number of them can be seen working in the backyard on things like landscaping.

“As much as they are working toward that goal, they are not quite there yet,” Schellenberg says with a smile.
