The Walk for Alzheimer’s

Jun 26, 2026

Altona residents are being invited to lace up their walking shoes and support Manitobans affected by dementia during the annual Alzheimer’s Walk in Altona on Wednesday.

The event, hosted at The Gardens on Tenth, serves as a fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba while also providing an opportunity for education, support, and community connection.

Life Enrichment Coordinator Carissa Kiansky said the day will begin with opening remarks at 10:30 a.m., followed by the walk itself at 11 a.m.

“Once the walk is completed, everyone is invited to stay and enjoy a free hot dog lunch and spend time together to support a great cause,” said Kiansky.

Community gathering for awareness and support

While the format will be similar to previous years, organizers have added a few special touches for 2026.

In addition to presentations from representatives of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Grade 2 and 3 French immersion students from Elmwood School will take part in the program.

Scheduled speakers include Alzheimer Society of Manitoba CEO Erin Crawford, Donor Relations representative Polina Vaslevsky, and South Central Region coordinator Rebecca Atkinson. Altona Mayor Harv Schroeder and Gardens on Tenth board chair John Falk will also bring greetings.

The Altona Sunflower Royalty is expected to attend as well.

Kiansky said the walk is open to anyone whose life has been touched by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

“It is for individuals living with the disease and for caregivers, family members, friends, and community supporters,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to this event.”

Opportunity to connect with experts

Organizers say the event also provides a chance for attendees to speak directly with Alzheimer Society staff and learn more about available resources and supports.

Following the walk, society representatives will remain on site during the lunch, allowing participants to ask questions and gather information about dementia-related services.

Supporting programs and research

Funds raised through the walk support the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba’s work across the province.

According to Kiansky, the Alzheimer’s Walk is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser.

Funds raised help provide support programs and resources for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease, while also contributing to research initiatives and public awareness efforts.

Accessible route for all ages

The walk itself is designed to be short and accessible.

Participants will leave the Gardens on Tenth, travel along 10th Avenue to the community’s Memory Tree at the corner of 10th Avenue and 6th Street Northeast, then follow the Memory Garden route back to the facility.

The route accommodates participants using walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids.

Following the walk, attendees can enjoy a complimentary barbecue lunch provided by Sun Valley Co-op in the Gardens on Tenth courtyard. The 2026 Alzheimer’s Walk takes place Wednesday at the Gardens on Tenth, located at 140 10th Ave. N.E. in Altona. with opening remarks at 10:30 a.m., followed by the walk itself at 11 a.m.

Kiansky said organizers hope residents will come together to show support for families affected by dementia.

“Whether you’re walking in honour of a loved one, supporting someone currently living with Alzheimer’s, or simply wanting to make a difference, your presence really does matter.”
