The Gardens

In this facility, all tenants live independently (with or without Home Care), but most participate in our meal program and all have access to a range of on-site services.  The front entrance is locked at all times, with guest entrance available through an intercom system.

MEALS – All meals are optional, but most tenants choose to buy the full Supper Plan.  Credits are available for missed meals.

Supper is served from 4:45-6:00pm in The Gardens dining room.  Two options are offered: one more familiar comfort food and one prepared by our professional chef (international cuisine).  See meals.

Breakfast and Lunch are also available.

Meal Plans are available for tenants in all combinations at a discounted price per meal.

Family members and guests are welcome to come for meals — please notify the kitchen at least one day in advance.  Call them at 204-324-8945.

Complimentary coffee is available in the dining room.

SERVICE PACKAGE – Every suite pays a monthly Service Package which includes the basic satellite package, complimentary coffee all day in the dining room, helps to pay for our Life Enrichment Coordinator and subsidizes a lot of activities, helps subsidize the common rooms like the MPR, Salon, Exercise Room, Library, daily garbage pick-up, etc.

THE GUEST SUITE – Our guest suite is available to tenants’ guests for $80 per night.  They will be comfortable in a room with a queen sized bed, a double sofa bed, a kitchenette, coffee maker, and TV.  Bookings are made by Reception.  Check-in time is 4:00pm on the day of arrival, and check-out time is 1:00pm on the day of departure.  We accept cash and cheques for payment, or charge to the tenants suite if the tenant wishes to pay for the room.

SATELLITE TV – All tenants get the basic Shaw satellite package included in a monthly Service Package.

WI-FI – Free WiFi is available in the Library and Solarium.  To purchase WiFi for your own apartment, please contact MTS or VISP.

BBQ – Gas barbecues are not allowed.  Electric barbecues are acceptable.  A gas barbecue is available in our Courtyard.

MAIL – Mail is delivered to your mailbox in the mailroom in the Lobby.

PARKING  Parking is available in the parking lot (assigned with plug-in) or in the Parkade for an extra cost.

STORAGE – A storage locker is provided for each suite in the Parkade.

HOUSEKEEPING – Services available.

SECURITY – The entrance door is locked 24 hours a day.  An intercom located in the entrance allows tenants to let guests into the building.  The intercom includes a directory of all tenants with suite numbers.  Guests may enter the suite number, or if they do not know it, they may scroll through the list to find the appropriate name and then press the green phone icon button.  This connects to the tenant’s phone, who can then choose to let them in from the convenience of their room.  The entrance door will then automatically unlock and open.

GARBAGE/RECYCLING – Garbage and Recycling are picked up every morning Monday to Friday.

MULTIPURPOSE ROOM – The MPR is provided free of charge to Tenants for family gatherings and activities.  Call Reception at 204.324.8945 to book.

The Manor

In this facility, all tenants live independently (with or without Home Care), and have easy access to a range of on-site services.

MEALS – Lunch is served at 12:00pm and supper at 5:15pm. Tenants may choose to do their own cooking or eat in The Manor dining room. Click here to see our Meals page.

Family members and guests are welcome to come for meals — please notify the kitchen at least one day in advance. Call them at 204-324-8945.

LIFE ENRICHMENT – SSGL (Supports for Seniors in Group Living) staff provide support and activities for the tenants five hours a day Monday to Friday.

NIGHT WATCH – Every suite pays an additional $30 per month to help cover the cost of the Night Watch. Night Watch walks the halls hourly and can check on tenants in their rooms during the night on request.

NIGHT LOCK – The Manor entrance doors are locked daily at 10:00pm and open at 6:00am.  Manor residents are issued a swipe card for access.

PARKING – Ample parking spaces available (with plug-ins) for $21/month.

MAIL – Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we pick up mail from the Altona Post Office.  We deliver letters and parcels to residents on those days usually during the noon meal.

LAUNDRY – There is a laundry room near The Manor lounge.  There is no charge for the use of these facilities by tenants.

HOUSEKEEPING & LAUNDRY – Services available.

COMMON ROOM – The Manor lounge and dining room may be reserved and used free of charge by residents for family gatherings or other special events.  There are public washrooms near The Manor lounge area.

EXTRA STORAGE – There is a room where each resident may have a locker or closet space for storing extra things.

MEALS – Noon meals only are available, served in the dining room at The Units at 11:40am Monday to Friday.  These meals can be paid for on a daily or monthly basis (meal package plan) or as otherwise arranged.  Family members and guests may come for a meal — please notify the kitchen at least one day in advance. Supper – To dine in The Gardens dining room, tenants may make arrangements with the Kitchen.  Meal tickets may be purchased at the kitchen in The Gardens.

LIFE ENRICHMENT – SSGL (Supports for Seniors in Group Living) staff provide support and activities for the tenants approximately four hours a week, including Bingo.  Tenants are welcome to attend activities in our other buildings.

A monthly Newsletter, The Garden Post is also provided.

General Information

STAFF –  Some of our staff are able to converse in English, Low German, and High German, as well as some other languages.

RENT – Rent is payable in advance, on or before the first of the month.  Rent can be paid by:

  • cash
  • cheque
  • automatic transfer (set-up by the tenant), or
  • EASIEST FOR ALL: pre-authorized debit (automated withdrawal initiated by The Gardens on Tenth)

SMOKING – All buildings are smoke-free.  We have designated smoking areas on the property.

PETS – All of our buildings are pet-free facilities.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS – Family gatherings can be accommodated at The Gardens on Tenth free of charge.  There is room for your group in:

  • The Gardens Multi-purpose Room
  • The Apartments Activity Room, Lounge or Tea Room
  • The Manor Dining Room
  • The Units Dining Room

DRINK MACHINE – We have a drink machine available to all tenants and guests located in The Manor.

PHONES – Many tenants use MTS for their phone – call their Customer Service line at (204)225-5687 or go to the MTS Connect store at West Park Motors in Altona (248 Centre Ave East).  If you mention that the phone needs to be hooked up quickly for safety reasons (i.e. Lifeline) hookup is much faster.

TELEVISION – Tenants will directly contact a satellite provider of their choosing.  In The Gardens, Shaw Satellite is included in the monthly Service Package.

SALON – We have a salon on the second floor of The Gardens building.  There are several hair stylists available onsite. Contact them for appointments:

TENANT ORIENTATION – Our Executive Director, Laurie Schellenberg, is available to answer questions for residents or their family or supporters.  Our receptionist can provide all the necessary moving-in information new residents may require.  Please call (204)324-8945.

WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH EVERYDAY THINGS?  Life Enrichment staff are available to give you a hand.  Call Grace at (204)324-8945 or Janice, Marge or Doralin at (204)304-1368.

ESTATE PLANNING/WILLS: Residents may want to include The Gardens on Tenth in their will.

TAXI SERVICES:  Rides may be arranged through C.A.R.E. (Community Assistance Resources for Elderly). Please call C.A.R.E. directly to make arrangements: (204)324-1528.

  • They offer a car and driver on a fee-for-service basis for individuals who do not use a wheelchair.
  • The C.A.R.E. Handi-van is used to transport citizens who do use a wheelchair.
