What is The Gardens on Tenth: Growing for our Community Campaign?
It’s a $3 million fund-raising campaign to provide the community portion of the funds required to
build a $17-$19 million, 66 unit, four-storey seniors’ housing facility.
Is there a need for more housing units in this community?
Our experience with waiting lists at our present facility, statistics on our local population
demographics and our think-tank meeting two years ago all suggest that this type of building with
services is required now, and even more so in the future.
How will the building integrate with the present facilities?
Connecting the new building with our present apartment building was always a pre-condition to
planning. The architects have achieved this by making the connection a pleasant solarium which will
also serve as a coffee shop.
“On retirement, where should we live? When I look at the proposed project, I know that The Gardens on Tenth is exactly what we are looking for! Safe, comfortable surroundings, a homelike atmosphere, great food, ease of access, everything we need to make it OUR home and to live independently for as long as possible!” – Jack Penner, Honorary Co-chair
Are there tax benefits in making a gift to the campaign?
The Gardens on Tenth is a registered charity. Any gift to this campaign is deductible to the extent
allowed by the Canada Revenue Agency. Most people are surprised at the tax benefits allowed for
their gift. Consult your tax adviser; if you are currently paying tax and already contributing to a charity,
they will confirm that a $1,000 gift will only be a net cost to you of less than $600.
Do you accept multi-year pledges?
Yes—you can make your gift payable over a three year time period. By taking advantage of the pledge
period you will be able to make a gift that truly reflects your giving ability and your desire to support
Do you accept donations designated as a memorial gift?
Yes—this is an excellent opportunity to recognize an important person in your life.
Will there be naming opportunities in the new building?
If you want to create a legacy for yourself or an important person in your life, there will be
opportunities available. This would be done in conversation with the campaign committee.
Who benefits from the funds raised in our community?
Part of the $3 million we raise will be used to make 14 suites more affordable for those who do not
have the financial means to pay the entry fee. Fundraising is also required to provide cash to finance
the project and pay for a new kitchen that will serve our entire complex, as well as providing meals to
“This is a most exciting project for our community, one that will be heartily endorsed by both business and private citizens. This is another of the many forward-looking projects we have seen in Altona over the past fifty to sixty years.” – Elmer Hildebrand, CEO Golden West Broadcasting Ltd., Honorary Co-chair
